What type, weight & brand of oil should I be using in my 1993 VW Passat?

I am a 17 yr old female who just bought her first car a 1993 VW Passat with a VR6 motor. Would anyone know what the manufacture recommends to use when doing a oil change as far as weight, brand %26amp; type ? ( synthetic -? )What type, weight %26amp; brand of oil should I be using in my 1993 VW Passat?
you should use a castrol semi synthetic oil at a 10w40, also don't forget to change the oil filterWhat type, weight %26amp; brand of oil should I be using in my 1993 VW Passat?
First of all, I would like to personally thank you on your purchase of a Volkswagen for your first car. These are very good cars, Honda is hype, and though that will be a neverending debate (Honda loses upon close analysis for being a hype badge with an H and no power, reputation only as reliable and thats it, read my Best Answer) I want to tell you you have purchased an excellent car that is very fast with the VR6 (if a VW four is not Turbo, it is OK but nothing special.)

So, Thank You. (My first car was a 1986 Volkswagen Jetta 5-speed, two years before they stopped making them in Germany in 1988. If your VIN starts with WVW, it is Germany. 3VW, it is Mexico.)

Now, onto your question.

You have the VR6. It is a German V6. German engines like the heavier oil. They are not afraid of it. Japanese and American CAR engines are afraid of anything heavier than 10W-30. Germany loves weight. In the engine, in the car, it is their safety and design. Heavy all the way.

I personally would make your first oil change Valvoline MaxLife 10W-40 (always change the filter with it, but you can make it any filter you want, most of the time they dont do a lot due to their position on the engine) and add it 5 quarts even (you have a V6.) Doing that, you should have it up to the Full line on the dipstick, I always like it to Full, not in the middle. You can let it drip out or not, it doesnt matter (each quart when filling.)

10W-40 oil is ehavier and protects more than 10W-30 oil and will not significantly addect your mileage. Going heavier (and there are at least 3 grades of oil, more like 4 heavier than 10W-40 if you count the non-Multigrades) is unnecessary in your vehicle, unless your engine is in serious peril, then it might buy it some more thime, but that is not going to save it ultimately either.... another discussion for another day. (When your engine drinks oil almost like gas, as a joke. Means it is about to pass on to the VW salvage yard in the sky. No saving it, it served well.)

Multigrade starts as '10' weight (an approvimate number of the CFM moved through the engibe when cold, hence W for Winter) and gets up to 40-weight when at engine temperature. YOU -CAN- USE 10W-40 ALL YEAR. IT IS DESIGNED TO START UP IN THE WINTER, AS LONG AS YO DONT LIVE IN MINNESOTS WHERE IT GETS BELOW 0 DEGREES. NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW THAT. It will also protect very good up to about 100 or 110 degrees, and is the best spread.

You do not ever need to use heavier oil than 10W-40 in your VS Passat. You also do not need to use anything lighter.

THe MaxLife itself is more like a Synthetic Blend, and i tis OK. Full Synthetic is frequently a problem CAUSER in an old engine, as it knocks out things that were sealing something. It is also like conventional, and its base oils are that, with additives 'synthetic.' Synthetic means anything a manufacturer wants it to mean.

Enjoy your 93 Passat, dont get too many speeding tickets on the highway with it (It will go over 100MPH with -ease,- just like my BMW inline-6, also powerful with nothing but Torque) an dI am almost sure it has over 75,000 miles on it. Thank You.
brand is not an issue. if you have the owner's manual, look in there, it will tell you. if not, call a vw dealer and ask them. it is probably 5w30.
Well congratulations!!

5W30 is the recommended oil. I have all my customers running synthetics in thier VW's.

Brands are more a matter of preferance than anything. Personnally, I like Amsoil. Harder to find, but the only pure synthetic on the market. But the key to synthetic oil is to use a filter designed for it. Its more costly, but how much is your car worth to you??
if you have owners manual is in there, or any auto parts store can tell you or go on line to the NAPA web site or auto zone web site and it will tell you.
see if you can find out what brand of oil the previous owner used and stick with that brand . it is sometimes bad to change up brands. as long as it is sae approved oil with weight that is in step with the driving temps you should be fine.
i think 10-40 Valvoline would be the best.in a car of this age i cant see the point of using an expensive or synthetic oil.

What gear oil weight do i need for a 2004 hyundai tiburon straight 4 version?

Are peanut butter and coconut oil effective for weight loss?

I've read that peanut butter and coconut oil are effective for managing weight and for eating healthy. However, they do tend to have a lot of calories and fat. But are they effective? (I'm not dieting or anything, my mom just told me that they were good for that.)Are peanut butter and coconut oil effective for weight loss?
Coconut oil is better than most other oils for you. I'm not sure about peanut butter, but it is a pretty nutritious source of food. The key, as with other things, is moderation. Replace other oils you would use with coconut oil, instead of adding it to your diet. Don't focus on it having a lot of calories or a lot of fat. Fats are one of those foods that are so varible depending on what kind you have. Some fats are good for you, some aren't.

I eat a lot of sushi, usually the crabstick or salmon with avacado, both salmon and avacado have a lot fats, but they are good fats, and I noticed I've started to slim down a little, and I feel better since i've been eating sushi for lunch, as opposed to Mcdonald's or fast food. Are peanut butter and coconut oil effective for weight loss?

What oil weight should I use in my 07 crf50?

What does the Owner manual say? (You can't expect us to reccomend oil with out reading the manual. And why should we read a manual for YOUR bike if YOU won't?) That said, I suggest 15W-50 from Mobil. It's a synthetic oil, and it gets HOT down here. So I can usually stretch my oil changing interval to once a year, at the end of the riding season. To the extent there is an end, here, I guess January would be it.What oil weight should I use in my 07 crf50?
experiment.... if you don't have a book, if you do use what it says... if not.... like i said experiment

i started off with 10w 40, bike vibrated at most rpm ranges, so i went with a heavier weight... 15w 40 is the usual tho.

oh yeah, i live in texas and currently am using 25w 40 (with good resutls... it was actually 4 cycle boat engine oil... but my bike doesn't virbrate or lose power)What oil weight should I use in my 07 crf50?
10w40 is sufficient
castrol gtx 20:50

What if I used a thinner weight oil???

My 86 Camaro V6 takes 10W30 but at the last oil change 5W30 was put in it.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages with using a thinner weight oil??What if I used a thinner weight oil???
Advantages include less time for oil to flow into the engine on startup and reduced effort to pump the oil. However, I would only switch to a thinner oil during relatively cooler weather, especially in an older, more-worn engine (as your '86 almost certainly is). This is especially true in summertime, when hotter temps usually dictate heavier oil to compensate for the thinning oil experiences as it warms. This is why racing oils are available in viscosities like 20W-50 (do not use this in your Camaro, however).

The recommendation of oil weight depends on the design of the engine and the conditions in which it operates. So, unless you live in Alaska, I would stay with 10W-30 during summer months and save the 5W-30 for the winter. That being said, if your engine is in relatively good shape, you can almost certainly use 5W-30 w/out any problems, as the differences btween the two are small. Just don't go putting something really light like 0W-20 in your car. What if I used a thinner weight oil???
a thinner oil lubricates faster and works better in colder weather, the thicker the oil is the longer it takes it to start circulating in a really cold engine, using a thinner oil wont hurt it none unless it uses oil and you,ll notice that it will use a little more if you use a thinner oil in it,other than that it will just circulate better and hold a slight bit more oil pressure, the real dis-advantage on doing that if the engine is high mileage it may start smoking and using oil, good luck.
Slightly better gas milage. On a 86 though I would use heavier such as 10/40 or 20/50. Why? cause it is very likely the engine has quite a bit of wear and some leaks, heavier oil will alleviate those issues better.
first number is viscosity of oil when it is cold second number is viscosity of oil when hot
The ';W'; means winter. For all practical purposes, when hot, 5W30 and 10W30 are virtually the same oil. When cold, the ';5'; will flow faster than ';10';. This will make oil available sooner when the engine starts up, avoiding any possibility of ';galling';, or metal-to-metal contact, between moving parts. On high mileage cars there is a tendency to pour ';heavier'; oils to cover for leakages caused by metal wear. If you decide to do this, look for 5W40 or 10W40 - which you may or may not find locally.

What weight oil should i use in my MF35 tractor? (3 cyl. perkins diesel) i live in florida where its hot?

15W40 is OK. Ask for Dello brand. Excellent oil. What weight oil should i use in my MF35 tractor? (3 cyl. perkins diesel) i live in florida where its hot?
30 weight? What weight oil should i use in my MF35 tractor? (3 cyl. perkins diesel) i live in florida where its hot?
Best to consult Perkins. If you don't have access to a manual, any 15W-40 oil will do fine. Big rigs get over a million miles on it, and Ford Powerstrokes get over 300,000 regularly.
15w30 for most deisels

  • What is the recommended oil weight for a 6.6-liter duramax diesel motor? For a 2007 Chevy Silverado.?

I plan on using mobil one synthetic oil. Its my first time changing my oil on my truck should I do anything different from when I change the oil on a standard gas motor? What is the recommended oil weight for a 6.6-liter duramax diesel motor? For a 2007 Chevy Silverado.?
15w-40 weight is what you should use and always change your oil filter WIX is the way to go, hand tighten filter, dip your finger in clean oil and go around your gasket of oil filter before installing, its all the same when changing oil, but make sure you know how many qt's it takes and do not over fill. And hell while your at it i'd check the fuel and air filter now that your hoods open..... Oh i change my oil every 3,000-5,000 miles, but i run my trucks pretty hard (farm work). What is the recommended oil weight for a 6.6-liter duramax diesel motor? For a 2007 Chevy Silverado.?
15-40, the same for all diesel engines, except for the N/A VW 2.4.
owners manual will have it listed
Most Diesel in pickup trucks require 20/40 weight.Be prepaired check owners manual, also you should check manuel for oil capacities every diesel required far more oil than a gasoline engine.Changing the oil itself is no different then gas engine
you should use any weight oil you like in your diesel as long as it is rated xd-3 usually the best is 15w40. but i'm not to sure about synthetic for diesels. the only thing i would do different about changing the oil would be to fill the new filter with oil before installing it, making sure to coat the seal with oil. also with a diesel, change the fuel filter.(saves a lot of headackes.
Your Duramax calls for a high quality 15W - 40 diesel engine oil. Please change the oil filter with an AC-Delco or a Wix brand. Get in the habit of following your service schedule - fuel filters in perticular.
