Back then they were using straight weights of oil. 20w, 30w, 40W, 50w. the higher the number the thicker the oil. Depending on the type of driving and temperature of your area you would adjust your weights. Hard driving(heavier oils), cold temps(lighter oils). Most used 30w. I assume this is a late-50s car engine? I think the original oil was a non detergent 20w or 30w. If the engine is in good shape (not worn out) 10-W30 detergent oil should be fine. I would also add a pint of the STP oil additive with Zinc. US passanger car oil doesn't have zinc in it any more, and older engines need the zinc as an anti-wear additive for the cam and lifters.
