Just wondering if anyone has a clue what the 2000 CB919F calls for as far as oil viscosity. My RC51 uses 10-40, but that's a V-twin. Could be the same, but maybe different?
Anyone know for a fact?What oil weight / viscosity does a CB919 ( 900 Hornet ) call for? 2000 CB919F?
yeah, same thing. If you are in the summer you can use 20/50 on both.
The colder the weather, the thinner the oil and viceversa.
Don't over top it with oil.

What weight motor oil should be used for my vintage car?
I have a 1984 Chry town %26amp; country, Labaron 2.6, the milage is 140,900 I usually change my oil every 1,000-1,400 miles. Since its almost 17 years old what weight would help keep it alive at this age? This car is well taken care of and almost every part has been replaced except for the engine and tranny..Thank youWhat weight motor oil should be used for my vintage car?
Actually your car is over 20yrs old, but thats not a bad thing. Most manufacterers will put a recommendation on the oil cap and when they don't its usually good to go with 30weight. 5W30 or 10W30, also with the miles that you do have I would also recommend that you use a high mileage oil because of the extra additives they put in to help the seals, bearings, and gaskets in your engine.
If you take good care of your car then it will last a long time. Also, I wouldn't recommend changing your oil so much, every 2500-3000 miles is just right.
Good luck and hope this helps. What weight motor oil should be used for my vintage car?
I have a couple older cars %26amp; I use 10w40 in them.
castrol high milage 20/50is the best for that car
I would say 10w30
It depends on the climate where you are. If it's a really cold climate, I'd go with 10w30, if it's a warm climate, I'd go with a 20w40.
Any quality brand of 10w30 would be fine. If your using conventional motor oil it would be OK to only change it every 3000 miles. Quaker State offers a special blend oil for engines with high mileage. If cost is not a factor synthetic motor oil would be an option. Synthetic oil offers superior lubrication with less break down so it can be run longer between changes and promote extended engine life.
10w40 oil used to be the ';standard'; for multi-grade oils when that vehicle was built but it does not hold additives as well as 10w-30.
For most parts of the country where winter is not close to zero degrees, 10w-30 would be fine for an all around, all-season oil.
The ';10'; refers to the viscosity at zero degrees F, and the 30 refers to the viscosity at 105 deg F. The viscosity will vary depending on the climate temperature. That's all those numbers mean. Make sure you use a good quality oil - any name brand or oil company oil (for example: Chevron).
The newer oils ';designed for older cars'; simply added a seal expander to help slow down oil leaks.
1000 to 1400 miles sounds a little premature, unless the time exceeds 6 months. A good interval would be 3 months or 3,000 miles; which ever comes first.

What weight motor oil for 1999 Mercedes C230 Kompressor? Vehicle stays in the climates of AZ and California. What weight motor oil for 1999 Mercedes C230 Kompressor?
Many Turbo Diesels are operating on the long haul and high load driving situations. The recommended oil designed for such service is described in API Service SJ/CF. Specifically, the Synthetic Oils (like MOBIL 1) with a 5W-30 viscosity rating meet the ACEA A3/B3 requirements for gasoline and diesel passenger car turbo protection. What weight motor oil for 1999 Mercedes C230 Kompressor?
Factoring in the hot climate and the addition of forced induction, go with a slightly heavier weight. 10W-30, or 10W-40 at most would make the car happy under normal operating conditions.
On cold mornings, let the car warm up and circulate the thicker oil for three to five minutes before hooning it. Not really critical, but helps a little for engine longevity.
Stay with one of the recommended oils by Benz. Your vehicle falls under MB lubrication specification 229.5. There are several oils which are approved (the dealer closest to me uses Mobil 1 0W40 European Formulation).
the recommended is mobil1 5/40

What oil type & weight is best to use?
I have a 1958 Chevy Apache truck with a 283 engine and want to use whats recommended by the manufacture back then. What oil type %26amp; weight is best to use?
Oil back in the '50's didn't have much in the way of protective qualities.
Depending on how new your truck engine is, I'd recommend something along the lines of the miles it has on it.
Go to your local parts house and ask them what they have in the way of engine oil that would be best for the age of the engine. What oil type %26amp; weight is best to use?
Back in the mid to late sixties there were only four or five choices depending on the manufacturer. Straight 20 or 30 weights, 10W-30, 5W-20 AND 20W-40.
Most hot rodders (back then) preferred the straight weight oils as the multi-viscosity grades tended to disappear quite readily if the tiny but tough 283 motor was pushed hard. Everyone's favorite was straight 20 weight. Today it may be very difficult to find high detergent 20 weight.
Go to Joe Gibbs racing oil to see what they use to beak in their motors, qualify, rectrictor plate race and when the suffocating plates are not used. You'll be shocked!
Since the fifties motor oil has improved 10 fold. If your motor is freshly re-built to factory clearances I'd use 5W-30 during the cold winter months and 10W-30 in the summer. No heavier under no circumstances.
I've got a close buddy who builds asphalt and dirt modified racing engines. The asphalt cars of course run dry sump oiling systems in 358 ci. Chevrolet's. The oil of choice 10W-30 synthetic Valvoline Racing Oil. The dirt modifides are not allowed to run dry-sump oil systems. The oil of choice here is 20W-50. Remember however, these motors run an entire season with valve spring changes @ 7,800 rpm's.
For gosh sakes, never dump 10W-40 in any gasoline engine. The 10 weight spectrium of that oil dissapears within 1,000 miles. After that it becomes more like a 20w-40, much harder for the oil pump to pressureize critical engine parts on start-up. That's precicely where 80% of engine wear occurs. Heavy molasses motor oil milks horsepower from your motor as the oil pump is requred to work much harder and it does not cool the engine as well.
Hi, back in the old days oil was oil......its different today. Depending on how often you want to change your oil, or how many miles per year you will drive your old truck is how i would decide my needs. In my antique Dodge, with a 225 slant 6, i use Mobil 1 synthetic, 5w-30w.....i drive the car alot to shows and around town. Although the oil says its good for 15,000 miles, i tend to change it every 5-7000 miles depending on my finances, since the stuff is $6.25 a quart. Same thing with my new car. Mobil 1, 5w-30w, an 05 Dodge Neon. My old truck is a workhorse, i dont drive it much, a 74 GMC 3/4 ton with a 350. When i do use it, it gets used hard....lumberyard, 4,000 lbs. of rocks, towing, etc. I only drive it about 3,000 miles a year, it gets 10w-40w Castrol GTX. I change the oil about once a year, just because of condensation in the motor primarily. I have owned it 20 years, and its still runs well on the original motor, but is starting to smoke a bit when i start it up. Depending on the climate u live in lighter weight oil is used in winter, and heavier stuff in summer. Older vehicles like yours back in the day were generally run on 10w-30w in winter and 10w-40w in summer....at least in the Northeast. If you shop for oil nowadays, i think Mobil even offers a 0w-40w synthetic. Thats awesome!! Lightweight for starts on the coldest days, and heavyweight for summer driving. Back then some guys just used straight 30w ND,.....non detergent. Oil is oil to some people.......i take good care of my cars........but my boss, he's a bit different.........i work for a used car dealer....in 2 years i've seen him do ';one'; oil change....on his tow truck. Every car we got for sale, either traded or bought at the auction, he'll just top it off with the cheapest oil he can find....';Fred's discount store'; oil. The car may even have a serious oil leak....just ad more ';Fred's!'; And, wipe off the filter while your in there!! Thats his motto!! He dont care....old or new, they are all just pieces of crap to buy and sell.....we got 57 Apache, 67 Camaro, 67 El Camino, 38 Plymouth, and a variety of 1995 to 2007 stuff to. Good Luck!!

Which weight motor oil for both Kia and Subaru?
I've got a 2007 Kia Spectra (~6000mi) which calls for 5W-20 and a 2003 Subaru Outback (~100,000mi) which calls for 5W-30. I change my own oil and would prefer to just have one stockpile of oil, all the same weight. Think either weight would be any better than the other for both vehicles?Which weight motor oil for both Kia and Subaru?
Use the manufacturer specified oil, It is there for a reason. Though 5w30 wont hurt either engine it pretty much standard for all engine but diesel. Try to stick to mobil 1 and castrol most people agree they have the best additives. Use a high quality filter. Change your oil every 3000 (5000 if you use synthetic). Going beyond that isnt a good idea, the filters no matter how good cant handle it; even newer oils that advertise 10000 or 15000 miles suggest changing the filter every 3000-5000 miles. Which of course means partially changing the oilWhich weight motor oil for both Kia and Subaru?
5w-30 is fine ,,and better for ur engine,,,5w-20 is very thin,,and only used to boost fuel milage a tiny bit....use mobil 1 and a GOOD (napa gold) oil filter,,,and just change ur oil once a year..or 15,000 miles,,,IT IS THE BEST

What weight oil should I use for my 1995 Nissan Altima?
10W30 or higher-should work good for old carWhat weight oil should I use for my 1995 Nissan Altima?
Look on top of the oil fill cap it will tell you there..Also in the owners manual it probally calls for a 10W30 or a 5W30 in my opinion it really dosent matter what weight oil you run as long as it has oil in it of course if you live somewhere where the tempature reaches 0 degrees in the winter then you defiantly want to run a thinner oil in the winter than in the summer...

In Answer to Question on Oil Weight?
The reason I know it was 10w30 was because it was on receipt. I had asked them to use High Mileage 50W because that is what I have used for two years now. And I am very good about getting the oil changed withing the time limit suggested. I have always taken very good care of my car. It is a 1992 Mercury GM and has been in excellent condition with only 121,000 miles. I know that is a lot of mileage, but not for that old of a car. Anyway, I told the car repair shop exactly what it was doing, shouldn't they have been able to tell it was something other than a radiator hose ? And would going from a high mileage 50W oil to a 10W30 oil cause it to overheat ?In Answer to Question on Oil Weight?
actually using thicker oil than whats called for by your owners manual is killing your engine.I'm surprised you haven't replaced an oil pump yet,or you simply omitted to mention that. the oil helps a little bit in cooling but its primary job is lubrication.if the hose has developed a leak or is getting old it will drip fluid out of the cooling system, and will cause your car to overheat.how old are the hoses? if their original, the hoses may be doing whats called ';sweating'; and losing the coolant through evaporation, which would leave no sign of dripping, but would still lower the coolant level, and the cooling systems effectiveness. In Answer to Question on Oil Weight?
your question starts out oil and ends up overheating. YOU NOW NEED TO GET GOOD MECHANICAL HELP. Switching from 20/50 oil to 10/30 oil will not cause overheating. Might make more motor noise on start up. Get the thermostat and radator tested. then procede to more expensive things. Some of the Ford engines have plastic intake manifolds that crack around where the thermostat and top hose hooks up. Good luck ';CARNAK SEES NEW CAR IN YOUR FUTURE';
the engine use the oil not only for lubrication but, also for cooling purposes
the oil pump force the oil through the gallery in the engine.with pressure and Speed. (the thicker the oil ,the higher the pressure and lower the speed)
high viscosity oil is producing(by not removing it) more heat
because, the oil gallery restrict the oil speed and also modern engine depend a lot in oil speed.
when the speed of the oil in the engine gallery is too slow then hot spots form in the engine sub secuently warpage might overcome and burned oil (might turn rock) start clogging the gallery.
unfortunated, the clogging always start forming in the most need it areas of lubrication.
no it wouldn't make it over heat. summer time you run a heavier oil weight because the heat will break the viscosity of the oil and damage your engine. winter time you use a lighter weight oil because it will make it a lot harder on the battery and starter turning the engine over to start.
1992 Mercury GM? No doubt your car was designed to run on either 5W30 or 10W30. Who told you to run 50W oil? 121000 miles isnt high mileage if you take care of it but running 50W oil isnt helping it any. If its over heating it is probably caused by something else like maybe a stuck thermostat.

When is it appropriate to increase the oil weight of your car?
use heavier weight in summer time and lighter weight in winter. The lighter weight in winter allows the oil too lubricate engine quicker and warm up faster, Also start using a heavier weight after 100K miles due to engine wear. When is it appropriate to increase the oil weight of your car?
you can put 10w in the spring but when the weather turns cold you shoulld downgrade to5w this help your engine last longer also when you warm up your ride don't rev it up let it idleWhen is it appropriate to increase the oil weight of your car?
i think you mean the viscosity? when the engine has done 80k plus. there are oils for high mileage cars.
Read your owners manual and follow the specific recommendations for your car.
Generally higher oil weight like 20W50 etc is applicable for high temperature, high load or racing applications. The heavy oil works better at high temperature, but puts more stress when the engine is starting and operating at light load, especially in cold temperature conditions.
If your car has a lot of miles on it or in extremely hot weather,
summer in the southwest.

What oil weight can be used in electric chain saws?
While Wm B is correct to a point, any oil will do if you currently have none and HAVE to get something cut up, bar oil is actually significantly different from 30 W automotive oil. It's much heavier and has a stringy characteristic to it, that allows it to stick to the chain and the bar much better. What oil weight can be used in electric chain saws?

What kind of cooking oil best for weight loss?
I'm trying to be on a strict low fat/ low carb/ high protein/ high fiber diet combined with 4 days of cardio and weight training. What kind of cooking oil is best for weight loss? I'm looking to lose over 50 lbs. I'm a 23 year old male. What kind of cooking oil best for weight loss?
Olive oil is always a wise choice in cooking oil. It contains monounsaturated fat which is actually good for your body. However, sometimes, depending on the dish you are preparing, you won't want the strong taste that olive oil imparts to food. In those cases, I'd reccomend canola oil. It's healthier than vegetable oil, cooks just as well, and doesn't leave any kind of unwanted taste with the food. What kind of cooking oil best for weight loss?
Olive oil does have a lot of calories and fat, about 140 per tablespoon to be exact, but the fat is unsaturated making it better for your body. A lot of European countries with low incidences of heart disease have always used olive oil for cooking.

Enova and Smart Balance Omega both would be good choices for you. Good luck!
Thats kind of a oxymoron. All oil is pure fat. When you trying to lose weight you shouldnt be eating fried foods to begin with.
To get your daily requirements of good fats try using a tablespoon of olive oil or safflower oil poured over you food.
Heating oil destroys the benefits you might get from it.
all oil has pretty much the same number of calories but if you choose one that can be heated to a higher temp less will be absorbed by the food. peanut oil is a good choice.
Extra virgin oive oil, unless you're frying at very high temps, then either canola oil or safflower oil would be best.
Well, Olive oil is great but it will scortch at high temps, so then I will use Canola. They both have a much better lipid profile then vegetable and other oils. Smart Balance has an Omega oil that is good also.
Its the ';trans'; fats you want to avoid.. one of the healthiest and easiest to digest is Olive oil
no cooking oil is good.
don't do that high protein thing.. it's bad for the heart and kidneys.
just high fiber, exersize... right amounts of hydration and aerobic style cardial stuff.
it'll be better for your blood pressure and organs.
i never known anything that is oily, fatty that is going to help.
especially at weight goals more than 30lbs.
high protein stuff you may lose 40 but then you'll start sliding back upwards... that atkins related diet crap never works past 30lbs.
and your heart won't be too happy for it especially if you're looking to build up and tone muscle.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
The best cooking oil for weight loss is extra virgin olive oil. Use only 2 tablespoons in cooking. Mixing your salad dressings with this oil and balsamic vinegar is tasty.

Should I use normal 30 weight automotive oil in my new lawn mower?
I just purchased a new Toro walk-behind mower with a Briggs %26amp; Stratton engine. It calls for 30 weight oil in the owner's manual. Should I just buy that viscosity of oil from the car oil shelf (right next to the 10w-30s, for example), or get one intended for small engines?Should I use normal 30 weight automotive oil in my new lawn mower?
I just purchased a new Toro walk-behind also. The manual I have says you can use 10w-30 but if the ambient air gets up in the 90's you will have to add oil more often.
It recommends straight 30W oil which you can get at many hardware stores and automotive centers. The manual also gives you the service designations that are acceptable such as SF, SG, SH, and SJ.Should I use normal 30 weight automotive oil in my new lawn mower?
Use straight 30W oil, which is not normally used in car engines, you need to get this from a garden machinery supplier. In the short term you would do no damage with the other oil, but in the longer run it really doesn't pay to interpret the manufacturer's guidelines loosely where oil is concerned.
when the manual calls for 30 weight you do not use a dual viscosity oil such as 10w30 etc...You use sae 30 weight and make sure to use NON DETERGENT.. not hd which is high detergent..just STANDARD SAE 30 WEIGHT...Yes it is the regular 30 weight in the automotive section
when i change my mowers oil it gets the best castrol 15/30
and i hve never had one stop on me, through oil problems
i just use regular 30 wt. and have never had any mower problems...
probably just fine use the newest type oil available ...sf ,se,....etc

1976 Harley Davidson FLH 1200 primary oil. What weight and how to check it?
The HD service manual doesn't say. Someone told me it is the same oil that circulates thru the engine, but that has to be wrong. I have oil in the tank, but she stopped dripping and makes noise, like the chain has gone dry. Is it 30 weight bath? does it recirculate? Fill it thru the oval foot peg cover plate or derby cover? Thanks for any info.1976 Harley Davidson FLH 1200 primary oil. What weight and how to check it?
Sorry Ryde On but your wrong about that year Shovel.Don't fill your primary with oil! That was a dry clutch for that year. You dump a quart of oil in there your going to have a slipping clutch.Believe it or not that was a closed system that drips oil onto the primary chain then vacuum in the engine sucks the oil back out of the primary to the oil tank. Not the best system for long engine life.Lots of guys get rid of it. Go look at this link it's a great site for getting answers for Harley related questions http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/pre-ev鈥?/a>1976 Harley Davidson FLH 1200 primary oil. What weight and how to check it?
Andy's right on this one. the crank case breather hose blows 60w engine oil onto the primary chain through a fitting attached to the primary chain adjuster.
then it is sucked back to a Y fitting in the return line through a drain hole in the inner primary.
you have to take the outer primary cover off %26amp;adjust the primary chain occasionally.
if its making noise the nylon chain adjuster shoe may be worn out, better check it. its only 10 or 12 dollars for a new one.
you can get rid of all the extra hoses %26amp; fittings %26amp; run primary oil like an evo if you put on a crank breather %26amp; block the holes in the inner primary.
Drain it through the plug below the clutch portion of the case ,add 1 qt of 80/90 or primary chain case oil.
You can fill through either inspection cover.
The primary does not share oil and does not circulate ,it just splashes around.

Most lawn mowers use 30 weight.
Any SAE 30 oil. Don't get tricked into buying ';Lawnmower Oil'; -- it is just 30 weight oil. The cheapest is SAE 30 Heavy Equipment oil.
Usually SAE 30. Any brand. Not 5-30, 10-30, 10-40, etc.

What is the best type of oil and weight for Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 4x4?
EX: valvoline, castrol, mobile, etc...What is the best type of oil and weight for Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 4x4?
you mean brand of oil?
being one who worked at valvoline and hearing every single day that motor magazine rated our snythetic number 1, id have to go with valvoline oil weight 10w30.What is the best type of oil and weight for Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 4x4?
One additional point, take a look on the internet for Low Zinc Additives in Motor Oil. Zinc has been the main additive in motor oil for years and is now almost gone with few people noticing the change. The main difference in Desiel oil is the larger percentage of zinc in that oil. After market flat tappet cams are failing. Many believe that he low zinc levels are, at least in part to this change. You can get Desiel motor oil at most auto part stores. My two cents.
Otherwise follow the owners manual for viscosity.
castrol gtx is by far overall best ive witnessed tests personally on 100,000 mile engines.the wieght depends on location and season,if its hot out go with 10w40 if its cold go with 5w30.

What brand and weight of oil should I use in my 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit 750?
What brand and weight of oil should I use in my 2007 Honda Shadow 750 Spirit? Also, how many quarts does it take?
Is there any other maintenance I should perform when I do the oil change? What brand and weight of oil should I use in my 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit 750?
Any quality brand of 10W-40 or 5W-50 will do. Change the oil filter at least every other oil change; many do it with every change, but that's more frequent than necessary. I don't know how much oil it will take; probably 3 to 4 quarts with a half quart extra when the oil filter is also changed.
Other things to check are: Hose condition, Coolant level, Brake Fluid level, Battery connections, Brake pad wear, and Windshield washer fluid level. Also periodically check the tires for abnormal as well as normal wearWhat brand and weight of oil should I use in my 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit 750?

What weight motor oil should i use if a car normally runs a little hot?
my daughter's car has been running hot. live in central florida. it's a 99 dodge neon. what weight would be best to help it run cooler? What weight motor oil should i use if a car normally runs a little hot?
YOu shoudl fix the problem with yoru cooling system, changing oil type wont help your car overheating or running hot.
You should flush, refill your coolant, and replace the thermostat while your at it since they are only a couple bucks, and require you to drain the coolant anyways to replace. What weight motor oil should i use if a car normally runs a little hot?
Honestly, 10w30 should be Better Suited for Warmer Running Temps.
But Really, running a Thicker Oil will NOT make a Dodge Neon run Cooler.
Heres what Will make it run Cooler:
A New Thermostat! :)
Also, check the Radiator Fluid. If it's Low, then that's the Source of the Problem.
Here are some Tips:
- Replace the Thermostat (with the one that is Designed for the Engine)
- Add Coolant %26amp; Water to the Radiator if its low
- Use 10w30 Motor Oil, and Maybe 15w40 if it's Driven Hard
If the car doesn't use or leak oil stick to the factory recommended 5W-30. Believe it or not higher viscosity oil will make a hot engine run even hotter. Heavy oil doesn't absorb or get rid of heat from frictional surfaces as well as 5W-30. Full synthetic 5W-30 would make the motor run cooler also.
No American car or truck company has ever recommended 10W-40 or 20W-50. Neither are energy saving viscosity's which Dodge recommends.
Why don't you have the cooling system drained flushed and cleaned so it wouldn't run hot to begin with?
True - oil does help cool an engine but not that much if it is over heating.
Go with a straight weight such as a 30W. Living in Florida you do not need a multi-viscosity oil formulated for winter use. You need an oil that will provide dependable main and rod bearing cushion so as not to damage close tolerance parts.
How many miles do you have? and whens the last time you had a radiator flush or a new water pump put in? I have an 01 and replaced the wp 3 years ago.
Mainly check your coolant level. It should be between the 2 marks (cold and hot) on the plastic overflow container.
No oil can make your car run cooler. Use a 10w40 or 20w50 if it has low oil pressure.

Should I switch to a heavier weight oil when I am out in vegas?
my honda van takes a 5 30, but it will be 110 degrees and I drive on the highway for hundreds of miles straight. I heard modern day cars are supposed to use what is recomended because the tolerences are tighter.Should I switch to a heavier weight oil when I am out in vegas?
Do not change to heavier oil just as you heard is exactly correct. I run a very large Auto group in the south keep using 5-30 a heavier oil will give u poorer fuel economy and may provide less lubrication. Most engines run between 180-220 degrees the ambient temp of 110 will not affect the oil as the engine normally runs twice that temp already.Should I switch to a heavier weight oil when I am out in vegas?
Heavier weight would make the problem worse. The tight tolerances mean it takes less viscous (lighter) oil to properly lubricate the bearings.
Just stay with what you have - should be 5W-30, although a few Hondas specify 5W-20. I lived in Phoenix for 25 years and saw a lot of 110+ days - I was married during a 21 day stretch of highs over 110 - and just used the recommended oil. In fact, the engine temperature should be pretty much the same at 110 as at 40 degrees - that is what the thermostat and cooling system do for the engine.
Some advice from a desert rat, though - always carry at least a gallon of water per person when on the desert highways in the summer. Don't leave the main road to look at something in the desert. For long trips, where you may be out of cell phone range, make sure somebody knows where you are going, when you should arrive, and that you will call them when you get there. Never ever leave your disabled car to walk to the gas station you see ahead. The rule of threes in the desert - CSI always leaves out the important part, although it is set in the desert - you can survive three weeks without food, three days without water and three hours without shade.
well i live in vegas i run 10w40 really it is best you stick with what weight that is recommended but really 10w30 wouldnt hurt it any at all and when your car gets more miles and you see that you have to add oil between oil changes going up a good thing

I agree, use the dealer recommended weight and grade of oil in your bike, though the brand is up to you. As long as your brand of choice meets the grade %26amp; weight specifications, it's OK to use. I would change the filter with each oil change as well, though sometimes they say every other. Do the oil change ';hot'; so more of the crud comes out when you drain the oil and it flows out better.
Be careful not to over or under fill with fresh oil, bikes are sensitive to that. What brand and weight of oil should I use in my 2007 Honda Shadow 750 Spirit?
Look in the manual that came with your car. It should tell you what weight of oil to use.

NO, your friends are living in the 70's and early 80's when sloppily build engines needed heavier weight oil. Quality control, engineering and tolerances are much tighter now, heavier oil will not flow and lubricate critical parts as well as as the proper weight oil, in your case 10W-30. If you do lots of pulling I would upgrade to a synthetic, as it has much higher temperature operating range, higher flash point than conventional mineral oil. Stick with the same weight grade though.Oil in chevrolet Z71 should i use a heavier weight oil?
Couldnt of said it any better.pbleek is right.I would recommend synthetic Valvoline in the recommended weight.

What weight oil should i use in my diesel tractor, i live in florida where it's hot! 15w-40,30wt,or 10w-40?
I am thinking of using rotella t 15w-40?What weight oil should i use in my diesel tractor, i live in florida where it's hot! 15w-40,30wt,or 10w-40?
Good starting point 15w40.
Theoretically it offers cold startup protection (15w)
as well protection at the higher operating temps (40w).
Regardless of the diesel engine's application,
I usually use Rotella T or Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 during engine break in
then switching to Royal Purple 15w40 synthetic motor oil.
.What weight oil should i use in my diesel tractor, i live in florida where it's hot! 15w-40,30wt,or 10w-40?
I live in Florida as well...I use a 10w40 for all my machinery during the summer time, and when it does get colder(i live in the panhandle)...I switch back to 10w30
id say you would want to use the 15 weight that will work pretty good in your tractor! i have a tractor in texas and use rotella 15w-40 best of luck
15w40 rotella
Are you going to trust your motor to the people on here? Wow. How about checking with the manufacturer and doing it right? It's your motor.
I'm in Florida too. Rotella 15W-40 should be fine. If you want to go synthetic check out Amsoil 15W-40: http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g118.pdf
My Amsoil website: http://www.number1synthetic.com
Good luck!
Good starting point 15w40.
Theoretically it offers cold startup protection (15w)
as well protection at the higher operating temps (40w).

What weight oil should i use in my MF35 tractor? (3 cyl. perkins diesel) i live in florida where its hot?
I also know about being HOT here in Birmingham AL! There are several oils which you can use in the tractor. I would definitely use an oil designed for use in Diesel engines such as Rotella by Shell or Delo by Chevron. For standard motor oils, either one should do the trick and hold up in the tractor without premature oil breakdown and failure. As for me, I use a different oil in my tractor and commercial maintenance equipment. I feel that the best oil available and the tests I have seen prove it is a synthetic oil named Royal Purple. This stuff is unbelievable - a little expensive, but worth it in my opinion. I purchase it in the gallon jugs or 5-gallon pail when available. Sometimes the gallons are cheaper, sometimes the 5-gallon jugs. The oil also comes in quarts. Royal Purple produces several different blends of synthetic oil for different applications. They do have the oil designed for the high temperature operation of diesels. I use Royal Purple 40 weight but you can us 15W-40. The 15W part is useless here in the south but most people do not understand about the first number and its purpose or thinner viscosity in cold ';Winter'; weather. Either oil you use, 40 weight or 15W-40, will work equally well. If your tractor has over 500 hours on it, (if it were mine) I would use a full synthetic such as Royal Purple or equivolent. If the tractor has less than 500 hours on it, I would use the Rotella or Delo 40 weight oil. Even though synthetics claim that their change interval is increased or prolonged, I change my oil at the recommended intervals. The extra expense for the synthetics for the ';broken in'; engine is worth it in my opinion. I know for a fact that on some of my small equipment used in commercial service, some of the machines should have blown up, rather thrown a rod or valve, many hours ago but they keep running. Some of the mowers run like a top and smoke a little and also have no power - they are just worn out but they still run. I can only attribute that to using Royal Purple in them. To date, I have not had any equipment using the Royal Purple synthetics just ';come apart';, they all have just been retired or replaced with new motors. As for my tractor, it uses a pint of oil like clockwork every hour and has for about 10 years now but runs like a top! I am quite confident that its due to regular oil change intervals and quality oil. Oh, also make sure that the air filter and fuel filters are replaced regularly. I replace my fuel filter at each oil change. Running a diesel lean or starved for fuel can cause it to overheat quickly. It is not uncommon to get some cruddy diesel fuel with gunk in it. If the fuel sits in a fuel can very long, diesel can actually grow algae etc. in it. Changing out the fuel filter should resolve most fuel issues. I hope the above helps. I have found the Royal Purple at local NAPA stores here in Birmingham. What weight oil should i use in my MF35 tractor? (3 cyl. perkins diesel) i live in florida where its hot?
You should ask at your local farm %26amp; fleet store where you buy your tractor parts. My husband thinks he's been using 10W-40 all purpose motor oil up here in central MN (we do not run these tractors in winter) in two WWII vintage Allis Chalmers tractors (regular gas).vincent

What is the recommended oil weight for a 6.6-liter duramax diesel motor? For a 2007 Chevy Silverado.?
I plan on using mobil one synthetic oil. Its my first time changing my oil on my truck should I do anything different from when I change the oil on a standard gas motor? What is the recommended oil weight for a 6.6-liter duramax diesel motor? For a 2007 Chevy Silverado.?
Forget Mobil 1
Use Shell Rotella T 15W-40 (best oil in the world!)
Or Chevron DeloWhat is the recommended oil weight for a 6.6-liter duramax diesel motor? For a 2007 Chevy Silverado.?
It's in the owners manual, same for the oil filter.
look in the owners manual.
Be Careful!!!
If you are driving a new body style Duramax you will need to use an oil that meets CJ-4 requirements or risk damaging emissions equipment.
I would suggest using the AMSOIL CJ-4 5w-40 in your new truck. http://www.modernoils.com/deo_5w40_CJ4.html

What oil weight do I use with my lawn mower?
I forget if it's 30 weight or 10-30 weightWhat oil weight do I use with my lawn mower?
The dipstick usually says what weight you need. What oil weight do I use with my lawn mower?
Probably 10W30
Check your manual, however most mowers use 30 weight.
good luck!!!
30 weight ...it might say 10w30 ,
Use 5w30. Its a bit heavier than 10w30 (2x to be exact). Stays in the pistons for a longer time on those short quick strokes that it has. Protects the engine a bit better.
Hello. Do you not have two-stroke, or four-stroke oil? All you need to know is if you have a two-stroke motor, or a four-stroke motor, and buy suitable oil.Ask lawn mower center.

whatever you have been using all along as long as it is not burning oil and if it is go with a heavier weight oil. What is the best oil weight to use in a truck with 150000 miles on it.?
depends on your climate and how much oil it uses, if it's about 1 quart / litre every 3 to 5,000 miles you can't go wrong with a 5w 50 synthetic ( Quaker state makes one ) or a 5 w 40 , dont try the mineral oils for this extreme viscosity range , they just can't cut it . if your one of those fortunate ones that NEVER see freezing temperatures , 10w 40 is a good choice for a mineral oil otherwise 5w30 .i hope this helps .What is the best oil weight to use in a truck with 150000 miles on it.?
you can use 10w40 or they have high milage oil, thats what i use,or if you wish, you can use straight 40 high detergent oil.
what size truck and what size engine?!?!
inline 6 in a pickup- 10/40w
V-8 in pickup- 10/40w for the winter and 20/50w during summer
Listen to (mister ss)!! If what you have used got 150,000 mls. on this ride then you are using the right product .I say this thinking that at this point it is runnig good and burns no oil .You failed to mention these items.
You will find, if you wish to experiment, That heavier oil will cause you to burn MORE.
i own a repair shop and you need to use a good synthetic oil in it ,and it with high miles on it,,it will help it last a lot longer and run a lot better, this stuff cost more, but its worth it in the long run id recommend it to anyone who has a high mileage vehicle,,id use 10-w-30 synthetic in it,,Mobil one is the beat brand on the market right now,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.

What weight oil should I be running in my Shadow 1100?
I live in MN. When the temp is in the 60's it tends to not start as easily as when it's warm. Would using a different weight of oil help this? If so, what weight would work best. What weight oil should I be running in my Shadow 1100?
10w40, 15w40, 15w50, 20w50 are usually the preffered grades.
Temps in the 60's are not cold and any one of the above grades will be completely fluid.
All carburated engines are a little bit harder to start in cooler temps. EFI can compensate for cooler, denser air, carburators cannot. You have to manually compensate with more choke and longer warm-ups.What weight oil should I be running in my Shadow 1100?
Use 10w40 from 32-70 degrees and use 20w50 from 50 on up. The temperatures overlap so as you can use the one oil longer if needed.
10w40
Dont do what I did. 10w-30 will cause the clutch to slip bad.vincent

Please do not use a multi-viscosity oil in a small engine! It is not designed to hold up to the increased temperature that small engines produce. So many people have been in my shop over the years with failed engines due to 10W-30 and 10W-40 oils that failed to lubricate properly, and factory warranty will not cover this type ';customer abuse';. Stick to the manufacturer recommendations, use a good 30W oil. It can stand the pressures of small engine life.
I would say stick with 10w-40 because that is mid grade.

Weight loss became a nightmare for me until I tried out acai berry. I know they say that pills don't work, but they certainly worked for me, and they have been featured on the Rachael Ray Show too. There is a free trial on right now at http://mecigs.transientdesign.net, give it a try , what have you got to lose? What result will I get by taking coconut oil for weight loss ?
The key for losing weight is not difficult - eat less food and move more - the difficulties surface when we in reality try to put that into practice! There are plenty of stumbling blocks in the real world aren't there?! The one method which clearly worked for me is green tea, it can be checked out in the resource box below, they have a limited number of free trials left, it has been highlighted in Reader's Digest and USA Today. I shed 20 pounds, it clearly does produce success!

What oil weight do I need for my 351 cleveland motor?
The vehicle is a 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 with a 351 cleveland motor and a FMX transmission. What oil weight do I need for my 351 cleveland motor?
where do you live ?, If you live in a area of moderate temperature's 10w30 would work the best. If you live in a desert area with a lot of heat I would use 20w50. Depending on what your compression ratio, if the oil passage to the heads had ever been drilled and chambered, and the temperature- would make me wonder if I would support the use of 5w30. The 351 is not a low friction engine and 5w30 oil were not in common use or approved in 1971 for this engine.Because your summer temperatures go above 90 degrees I would swap half way threw the year. use 10w30 in Fall and Winter, and 20w50 in Spring and Summer. As for using a straight weight oil--that went out with the 1950's and the belief that a engine is worn out at 50,000 miles. What oil weight do I need for my 351 cleveland motor?
With a 351c engine I would run 30 weight without the 10w.
10w30 would be the best in your case.
Can't go wrong with 5W-30 or 10W-30, I personally run 10W-30 in my 302

What can the wrong weight oil do to a engine?
i put 10w 40 in my tahoe and didnt see that it needed 5w 30. and now my engine knocks and I can smell oil buring..what did i do???What can the wrong weight oil do to a engine?
10w 40 oil did not cause your problem but you may want to check to see if you left the old oil filter sealing ring stuck to the engine when you installed the new oil filter.
Obviously you are loosing oil since you changed the oil due to the burning oil smell.
Do not run the vehicle until you look for leaks.
Is the oil level ok?What can the wrong weight oil do to a engine?
I put 5w-30 in my 89 civic one time and it started burning up after I drove across the country. After that I put thicker oil in it and never again had any problems. I actually put 20w-50 in it when it really called for 10w-30. Anyway, as I've since learned the proper viscosity oil is important to an engine in order to properly flow through the moving parts and in particular lubricate during start- up. So, I always use the proper viscosity now. That said, I've never had a problem due to the different weights of oil. A friend of mine overfilled his car and ran into serious knocking. He had destroyed his engine. I seriously doubt that the problems you've encountered are due to the thicker viscosity. It's probably just a coincidence and there is another cause, assuming you didn't overfill it.
Well you only want to put in 5w30 in your car if you live in a cold area. And 10w40 in a more warmer climate like southern california. It seems like your engine ended up overworking itself. And with the knocking it sounds like an expensive engine repair for you. You don't want to use oil to light in weight in warmer climates or else your engine is gonna end up with viscosity break down. Hope that answer your questions.
Depends on where you live. In hot weather. your engine could knock. Drain the 10w 40 and refill with 5w 30. Add a bottle of oil engine treatment. The smell of burning oil could just come from a spill or even drops of oil on the manifold or other hot part of the engine. Change the oil filter too. Do not overfill. The gaskets could give out on you.

What do you know about taking Fish Oil and Weight Loss?
My personal trainer wants me to take 10g of Fish Oil per day (10 pills). What are the benifits of the fish oil and weight loss? What do you know about taking Fish Oil and Weight Loss?
Well it make metabolism run faster so you can enjoy more foods like pizza. What do you know about taking Fish Oil and Weight Loss?
take the directed amount it says on the bottle, you should only be taking like three pills a day. The benefits are it helps your cardiovascular system. You won't see a difference in weight lose by taking it, it's just like a multivitamin it's good for you but really won't make that big of a difference when it comes to losing weight.
Whenever you are trying to lose weight, you should concentrate on these three things which all work together in providing a healthier and quicker weight loss goal for yourself. I have found this combination really successful in my weight loss plans. The first thing is exercising and how much you can put forth into it. The more you exercise, the more results you will see. The next thing is dieting and the calorie intake. If you exercise more, technically you could eat more? Always watch what you eat.
Now the last step in a good weight loss plan is always a good diet pill that can help you get to the end of the road. I have found Proactol which is a natural herbal diet pill to be the best around. It's an appetite suppressant along with being a fat blocker which stops up to 28% of fat you eat. Read up about it at TheWeightLossPlace .com where I saved money on it. Proactol really works well with exercising which gives you plenty of energy to perform. Along with that your diet will be affected by Proactol due to the appetite suppressant and fat blocker. If you slip up on meals, the fat blocker kicks in. It's really great to stop food cravings.
Concentrate on those three things and the combination is deadly for the fat cells in your body. Good luck and I hope this helps.
Fish oil is a natural viagra for both men and women. Its an aphrodesiac. Is your trainer a male? I would question why he wants you to take that if he is and if its a woman they may still have a personal motive.
that sounds like a LOT of fish oil (%26amp; i would look up online or ask my doctor). Also be careful over-doing anything - my personal trainer almost killed me!

use for a toyota camry with 142,000 miles in it to get max mileage/gallon?Can i mix different types of oil (weight/brand) into my car that is low in oil now? And what kind should I?
At 142K miles, it doesn't really matter-F.Y.I.-Unless it's freezing where you are, run 10W-20(if/when it IS, use 5W-20)for optimal engine protection with the least drag. Some oils don't really mix well,(Penzoil and Quaker State are Pennsylvania-crude based-which means they don't mix well with others, and build ';sludge'; on NON-moving parts more than others) but it won't actually hurt anything-running with low oil, however WILL ! ALSO-avoid, if you can, ';parrafin-based'; oils(Chalet, etc.-usually only found @ $-stores, liquor stores, etc.)Can i mix different types of oil (weight/brand) into my car that is low in oil now? And what kind should I?
Yes you can
Actually the viscosity/weight of added oil is less important than the brand. Since each brand has it's own additives some can react to each other and form harmful acids/deposits. Since your engine is leaking/burning oil, you should have the problem fixed asap since both conditions are causing unnecessary pollution.
no dont mix different weight oils ur stuff wud git fcked up but different brands is alright
quaker is the best oil
Yes! Some oil is better than low oil. Synthetic is the best oil. But if your car is low then it probably is using or leaking oil so I would just use the cheapest.
Yes you can mix them. I do all the time in my beater truck and have not had any engine problems.
I would use 10w 40 oil and I would buy the cheap stuff in the gallon cuz it sounds like your car is leaking or burning oil.
If you dont mind spending money, use high mileage synthetic oil for the best performance.
You can,but since you have a camry, and oil galleys are smaller than domestic veh. , you probably don't want to go higher than a 30 weight oil. Now if you are not leaking, burning oil and no severe eng. knocks or pings, you might want to look at a synthetic blend, but nothing higher that 10w30. It would not hurt to use a can of Lucas oil treatment and a SeaFoam flush through the engine too.

i use penz 10-30 for all 3 mowers and all 3 vehicles. keeps it simple. i only have to buy one brand and weight for everything.

Does anyone have an idea with running lighter weight oil in a 2001 Civic?
I am using 5W-20 as prescribed on the oil cap, but now want to use 0W-20, or 0W-30 synthetic. Any chance of anything not being properly lubricated? The car was bought new and now has 55K on it, and has had Amsoil synthetic in it for the last 2 years.Does anyone have an idea with running lighter weight oil in a 2001 Civic?
The Mobil 1 0w-20 was made specifically for Hondas. Use it without worry, it's the best oil made, in my opinion.Does anyone have an idea with running lighter weight oil in a 2001 Civic?
Why not stay with the oil recommended? If you are using the synthetic then stay with it. A friend had over 220,000 on a S-10 pickup and it sounded like new. Always changed the oil every 3000mi and the filter. If it works, don't fix it.
i own a shop, and your not going to have any problems with things not getting lubricated in it,thinner oil will lubricate a lot better, but it also drains down a lot faster and doesn't stay on things that need it as long, but it will get everything that needs it plenty of oil,i cant understand why your wanting to go less, its not going to help the car any at all doing this, but you can do it,but that oil is going to be like water in it,good luck i hope this helps.

Do you know how well a 20 weight motor oil protects compared to a 30 weight oil as far as temperature goes?
Thanks.Do you know how well a 20 weight motor oil protects compared to a 30 weight oil as far as temperature goes?
Are you talking about ';single grade'; (20 or 30) or ';multi-grade'; (10W30)?
30 is a heavier oil than 20. I wouldn't advise using anything above 20 unless you have a real oil pressure problem in an engine you don't care about (eventually you'll blow seals)
Try checking out Valvoline's website.Do you know how well a 20 weight motor oil protects compared to a 30 weight oil as far as temperature goes?
20 weight will protect it a lot better ,because its a lot thinner based, especially in the winter time,i usually use a 10-w-30 all year round then i don't have to worry about it,it will just give you better warm ups ,its a good oil to use,but you can check in the owners manual and see what it calls for, that's what i recommend before you change the weight of it,read the manual and see what it says.good luck.
straight 30 weight isnt used that much anymore..
Oil Viscosity
The viscosity of multi-weight motor oil is specified using two numbers. The first number is the viscosity when the oil is cold. This is followed by the letter W (which stands for winter, not weight), which is followed by the number that indicates the viscosity when the oil is at operating temperature. The higher the number the thicker the oil.
Viscosity Modifiers
In order to protect an engine at start time, the oil needs to be thinner when cold so it flows freely. Viscosity modifiers are added to the base stock to make the oil flow better when cold, without making the oil too thin when hot.
Climate Considerations
Owner's manuals and service manuals will specify the acceptable oil to use at various temperatures. In warm climates, 10W30 is usually an acceptable alternative to the preferred 5W30 and may be used without measurable adverse effects. In the olden days, before multi-weight oils, it was common to have a winter oil and a summer oil. This is no longer necessary, but if you normally use 10W30 because you live in a warm climate then be sure to switch to 5W30 if you plan on using the vehicle in very cold weather.
5W30 versus 10W30
Virtually all new passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. use either 5W30 or 10W30 oil. The difference between the two is that the 5W30 flows better when cold, so if you live in a cold climate or operate your vehicle in a cold climate during the winter months, you should use 5W30 if it is the preferred oil for your vehicle. If you live in a sub-tropical climate and don't operate your vehicle in cold climates, then 10W30 is acceptable as long as the manufacturer specifies that it is permissible to use it.
Is there a disadvantage to using an oil that flows better when cold, i.e. 5W30 versus 10W30?
Sometimes, but usually not. The crux of the issue is this: the bigger the difference between the cold oil viscosity and the hot oil viscosity, the more the volume of viscosity modifiers and the less the volume of base stock. If you are good about following the manufacturer's recommended oil change interval then stick with the 5W30 if that is the preferred oil for your vehicle, even if 10W30 is acceptable in warmer climates. Older cars may specify 10W30 only. This is because they need a little more viscosity when cold to keep a protective film on the cylinder walls. There have been instances where the larger amount of viscosity modifiers that are present in 5W30 have broken down due to excessive heat and have left carbon deposits on the valves, but this is extremely rare. The proper fix would be to reduce the excessive heat, but the workaround was to use an oil with less viscosity modifiers.
Why do many oil change places, even dealerships, use 10W30 instead of 5W30, even when 5W30 is preferred?
According to www.cartalk.com (see link in the references section), as well as many mechanics who have posted on usenet, 10W30 is the closest thing to a one size fits all oil. Many older vehicles need 10W30, and most newer vehicles are okay with it in warmer climates. Since many garages don't want to have multiple tanks of bulk oil they choose to carry only 10W30. The advice that Tom %26amp; Ray give is correct, 'it would not be a disaster if you used 10W30, but given a choice, go with the manufacturer's recommendation and use the 5W30.'
Thicker is Better Myth
The reason that oil viscosities have gotten thinner is because bearing clearances have become smaller. Using thicker oils will interfere with oil flow and the oil pressure will increase. In a worn engine it may be okay to increase the viscosity of the oil because the bearing clearances have become larger.
If you r car recommends a sae20 weight oil it is best to stick with that oil,the out side temp does not really affect the viscosity(thickness) of your oil it is the internal temperatures that have an adverse affect on your oil when the temperature inside of your engine exceeds the thermal breakdown rating of your oil the oil will lose its ability to protect by becoming thinner as it heats up,at normal temperatures the oil maintains its advertised sae weight rating, oils today usually have very high thermal thresholds at or above 600 degrees with synthetics as high as 750 degrees and many racing oils above 800 degrees so unless you are really working you engine you should not need to change the recommended weight of oil in your car.
why are you wasting time with mono-grade oils? unless you have a specific application, in which case you would be best using what is suggested by the manufacturer
modern multi-grade oils are so much better with less hassle.

How do I know what weight oil to use in a particular small engine? I no longer have the owner's manual.?
I have a mower, garden tractor, generator and snow blower. How do I know what weight oil to use in a particular small engine? I no longer have the owner's manual.?
Hmmmm. There's alot of incorrect info being given to this point. MTD stands for Modern Tool and Die. Although MTD has bought up alot of other brands, Murray is not one of them.
Lawn tractors all use 4 stroke motors in them, as do most snowblowers, lawn mowers and generators. There are the odd exceptions but those are few and far between. If there is a crankcase for oil to go into, then the engine is definitely a 4 stroke. As several people have already suggested, 30 weight motor oil is the first choice for air cooled engines in outdoor power equipment. However, straight grades of motor oil are getting a bit harder to find these days so you can also use a multi-grade oil such as 15W40, 20W40 or 20W50 in everything except the snowblower. I would use 10W30 or 5W30 in that engine because it is only used during cold weather and that particular multigrade will help it spin over a bit easier in sub-zero temps. My personal preference is Shell's Rotella T oil but any direct equivelant is fine. Just make sure you change the oil every 25 hours hours MAX and keep the oil level filled to the line inbetween changees. How do I know what weight oil to use in a particular small engine? Most mowers, garden tractors and a lot of snow blowers are manufactured by Murray Tractor Division (MTD). You can visit their corporate page http://www.mtdproducts.com/corporate/ind鈥?/a>
and select the brand name that is on your lawn care product and find the literature for your particular model.
As to the generator, you can google the manufacturer and get to their web site. Once there you should be able to get the particular model's manual(s).
Barring that, the oil I use in all my small gasoline powered engines is Mobil-1 10w30 fully synthetic. I have had no mechanical problems as a result of wear. Abuse, yes, wear, no.
Well Ron you will probably use a 10-40 with no problems. A 5 -30 will also do fine. the 10-40 will be a little higher viscosity and help with lube when the engine gets hot....
in a small engine that is 4 cycle, oil you do not put in the gasoline as a mix. small engine oil is SAE 30, on all small engines.
Unless any of them are two cycle motors ( oil/gas mixed like chainsaws/weedwackers) , Id just use a name brand SAE 30 motor oil. Normal automobile oil can be used as well, ive used 10w30/10w40, 5w20/5w30 in my tractors with no ill effects ( automobile oil has teflon in it , which supposedly could build up over time) - I have a 1992 lawntractor i bot new and have always used 10w40 in it and its still running great. For a bit more added protection , i use a bit of Lucas oil additive when i change the oil. It really shouldnt matter what type of motor oil you use, just change it on a regular basis.
Kidd
usually it all takes a 2 cycle oil even if you go to a hardware store it will either say two cycle or lawnmower oil or it will say small engine oil. they will help you if you have questions iworked at a hardware stor it was allways a two cycle oil or i forgot there is one that is a sae 30 weight which is also the same thing.trust me i sold enough of it.
You can also check the engine for an instruction tag, usually located in a visible spot on the engine, which gives instructions for oil and other engine details.
In the crank case any good motor oil will do.
If you are talking about two cycle engines which need oil in the gas, you need to know the mix ratio required by particular engine. The ratio is usually in ounces of oil per gallon.
The best bet is to do a search for the model and brand on the internet.

What weight oil can I use in my primary chain case?
I have an 81 sportster and just got some oil from dealership that is $9 a court. it does not give the weight on the bottle does anybody know what the weight is? I spilled some of it and need more now I hate to spend the extra if not necessary. What weight oil can I use in my primary chain case?
I have been a biker for 37 years, and owned plenty of sportsters, had one in Germany where the closest dealer was 300 miles away, one day after riding to get ';Harley oil'; I felt heat coming from the oil tank, hot day in traffic, opened the tank cap and my expensive oil was foaming like an ice cream float, a brother biker turned me on to Valvoline 50 wt racing, and there is no other oil for an older sporty, never foamed, stayed cooler, and much cheaper. What weight oil can I use in my primary chain case?
When your bike was built HD suggested to run the same oil as the motor. However it is beat to use some ';sport trans fluid'; or similar. (these were not available in 81, but makes shifting easier esp. in cold weather They are made by several companies Ultma, Motor factory, Bardahl, Rev Tech, Bel Ray and others)These oils are specifically for the primary/trans on Sportsters. Most companies making a specific V twin oil also make a Sportster trans oil. (this differs from Primary Case oil that is formulated for big twins)
There was this one old guy that used automatic transmission fluid. I wouldn't recommend mixing HD Formula Plus with ATF, but if you bought HD Formula Plus then I would recommend a non-synthetic 20w-50 as a cheap addition.
Bottom line, you need to put in more of what you've already got. Mixing stuff is never a good idea.
I can try using FORD TYPE ';F'; automatic transmission fluid. YES; I said automatic fluid.
It has excellent lubricating and heat transfer properties. There are two types - use the one without Dextron. And don't use GM tranny fluid - it's too thin to use in this application.
Go to your dealer and tell him you want primary oil for an 81 Sporty. case closed.vincent

What engine oil weight should I use in a GM engine with 160,000 miles?
If your car calls for 5W-30 and you've noticed no appreciable oil consumption, stick with the factory recommendation. I wish you'd have included the year, make and model to me perfectly accurate as far as 5W-30. If you have any question which viscosity to use, go to the mobil1 website and near the top there will be a box to fill in all the criteria about your car. Follow all the questions to the end and it will mirror the factory advised GM viscosity.
With out a doubt you'll get some other views on this but the recommended viscosity will allow your oil pump to pressurize critical frictional surfaces with more volume of oil faster in all temperatures. Cold start-up's is where 80% of engine wear occurs. It's to your advantage to use light weight oil. Low viscosity oil actually cools frictional surfaces faster and more efficiently than heavier oil. You'll also realize more horsepower using the correct viscosity as the oil pump works easier. What engine oil weight should I use in a GM engine with 160,000 miles?
Most post 1995 gas engines specified 5W-30 oil. If you keep to recommended change intervals, virtually any SAE approved oil will do, don't get hung up on brands. What engine oil weight should I use in a GM engine with 160,000 miles?
depends on how you drive it now since its about to get cold i would use 10w-40 and when it gets hot 20w-50 its what i run in all my cars, but 10-30 will do
Probably 10W30. Check your owners manual for sure, or the dealership near you.

Can different weight oil cause a leak?
I've got a 2001 V-6, Flex Fuel Ford Taurus. It calls for 5W-20 oil. On my last oil changed, I switched to 10W-30 (it's cheaper). Now, I have an oil leak near the front of the engine. It's dripping on to the exhaust and smoking. Could the switch to 10W-30 have caused the leak? Can different weight oil cause a leak?
My guess is that you have an oil leak that would have started even if you'd have used the recommended 5W-20. Be sure all the pan bolts are tight. Drive it a few hundred miles and re-check the exact area of the leak.
Make sure the oil filter is dry and tight. Check to see if the filter gasket is not leaking as it is above the exhaust cross-over pipe.
For some strange reason the metal oil pans on Taurus %26amp; Sable cars are prone to rust and corrosion. The aluminum pans on the Duratec 3.0 DOHC 16 valve motors are not prone to leakage.
If it would make you feel better change the pan gasket as well as the front and rear main seals if the leak is near the ends of the pan. An independant mechanic could do a good job and save you the $75.00 Ford dealership shop rate.
I'm not sure when (what year) Ford switched over to 5W-20. It's an effort to save fuel. Please remember that the recommended oil is a lower viscosity oil thus it is pumped to critical engine parts quicker at start-up. This is where 90% of engine wear happens. Maybe the 10W-30 created slightly higher oil pressure causing a weak front or rear seal to leak.
If your handbook in the glove compartment calls for 5W-20 I'd give it another shot and monitor leakage.
Try this to monitor future leaks: Spray the block and pan rails with Gunk degreaser and hose it off with water to clocely monitor future oil pan leaks. It's important that you know exactly where future leaks are before making a drastic repair.
Good luck! Can different weight oil cause a leak?
Not possible. Whoever did the oil change probably just spilled some of it around the filler cap. Using a thicker oil like 10w30 will actually stop or slow down an existing leak. If you would switch to a thinner oil and you happen drive a high-mileage beater with old and worn seals, that can often cause a leak but then it would stop again once you go back to using the proper weight. However, I would recommend you switch back to 5w20 if cold weather comes, wherever you are, because 10w30 may get too stiff to flow properly in your particular engine at very low temperatures.
No, I bet some got spilled during your last change is all that happened, but you may have developed a leak through normal wear and tear.
what the rating system is, is a measure of oil flow at differant temperatures.
10 = is a how fast the oil flows at winter temperatures
W = stands for winter
=
30 = is the measure of oil flow at summer temperatures
The lower the number, the faster the oil flows because it is thinner.
no thats a seal problem oil is to stop friction
you should be using 5w20 because that is what the engine calls for you could cause damage to the engine if you keep using 10w30 .oil is cheaper than a new engine.read your owners manual it will tell you what oil you can use

What is the best weight oil to use in a car? I live in PA and do both city and hwy driving.?
I have 2 SUV's and a 4-cyl passenger car. I do everything from hwy driving to towing a trailer with the SUV's. I wasn't sure if 5w30 was the best oil for my cars year-round. i live in south central PA, and have both winter and summer weather. What is the best weight oil to use in a car? use 5w30 year round. That is what the manufacturer recommends and is the best in all temps. What is the best weight oil to use in a car? I live in PA and do both city and hwy driving.?
look in your maintence manual. should be 5w30 or 10w30 for year around driving
I live a little south of you (just north of Baltimore) and probably have similar weather. I run 10w30 in my truck (V8 engine) and 5w30 in my wife's 4 cylinder car (both synthetic oil).
You didn't mention what type of SUVs you have and whether or not they're still under manufacturer's warranty (if so, follow the owner's manual recommendations for weight and frequency). 5w30 would be fine for the winter in all the vehicles and fine for year round use in the car.
If the SUVs are V8s, you may want to use 10w30 in the summer. The advice of an oil cooler for the towing is right on, too.
synthetic valvoline bottle, not in the drums when you get your oil changed because it's recycled.also better driving but once started you have to continue use.
Best advice is to follow your owners manual. Most newer cars run fine on 5W30....
If you are doing heavy towing, you should have an auxilary oil cooler installed
Whatever the owners manual say is the best. The manual for my car specifies 10W30. A diesel pickup specifies 15W40
use 10 w 30 in the summer hot months. The reason is that the heat will break down the 5w30 oil much quicker. Use 5w30 during the cold winter months when there is less heat.

Oil weight for Honda Shadow Spirit VT750 motorcycle?
I have had my bike for over a year now and I didn't receive a handbook.
I need to know what oil weight my 2006 Honda Shadow Spirit VT750 takes. I'm going to attempt to change my own oil to save some cash.Oil weight for Honda Shadow Spirit VT750 motorcycle?
u should get a service manual. they will tell u everything u need to know about the bike; oil weights, plug gap, etc.Oil weight for Honda Shadow Spirit VT750 motorcycle?
20 50 summer
10 40 winter
no synthetics
From my manual, use 10-40 if max temp is under 80F and 20-50 and 20-50 if its over 100.
Im sure most people run 10-40.
And you refill with 2.5 US quarts if you change the filter too, which I HIGHLY recommend.
30 to 40 weight is standard for fair-weather riding; lowerweights for high temps, higher weights for lower temps...Obijon2112vincent

What oil weight should i use in 2002 4.6 v8 ford explorer?
my manual says only to use 5w 20 in this engine, my dad says i should use thicker weight in summer and thinner weight in winter. What oil weight should i use in 2002 4.6 v8 ford explorer?
Your dad is absolutely correct, HOWEVER his advice will only apply to older vehicles.......On newer engines (new being less than a 10 year old design, TYPICALLY, not always) the tolerances and clearances (space between moving parts) is very tight, and you need to put an oil thin enough to pass through the oil galleys and passages, but at the same time thick enough to protect the metal.....Could you use a heavier weight oil like a 5w-30, or 10w-30 without any problems? Maybe, but I would not recommend it. The engineers at Ford didn't just pick randomly to use 5w-20, they chose it for several good reasons......If it was my car, i would use a full synthetic 5w-20 oil.............ASE certified technician, Associate Degree in Applied Science in Automotive Technology

Different oil weight for the winter time?
I drive a 95 honda civic d15.
Is it better for my engine to use a different oil besides 10-w30 in the cold winter?
How about 5-w20?Different oil weight for the winter time?
sounds good for cold country, I live in California and run 10-40 all year round :)Different oil weight for the winter time?
yes 5 20 is what you want , the new Honda's use it year round .somebody here has it backwards, the -w- number is winter, tells you its ability to flow at low temperatures, the higher number is upper temperature limits, so if you go on long trips use 5 w 30 .
no as long as you use multi grade oil its not necessary to change for winter. it will not get thicker than 30wt oil and not get thinner than 10wt whenit gets hot.
Where do you live? 5w-30 usually or you can switch from regular to synthetic and back 0w-30.
5w-20 is being recommended more and more (ford, honda, etc) for gas mileage concerns.... its a good safe oil to use, just make sure (which I don't beleive so for a 95) that it was deemed safe to use in your model year engine...
10w-30 is ok in the winter.... but if you want the best cold flow protection, go with a 5w-30....
it all depends on outside temperature. thinner oil will let the car start easier in cold weather. and higher viscosity keeps things oiled better in hot weather.
how cold does it get. 10-30 is OK down to about 30 degrees.
5 w 30 would be ok I dont know of any cars using the 5w20. the 20 is a litte thin for when the engine warms up. I recommend.... to read your manual and use what the manufacturer recommends. Alot of people think that weird combos of different oils are better, but I assure you they are not. I also recommend Synthetic Oil like Mobil 1 and use a HIGH quality filter and extend your oil change intervals to around 5000-7500 miles for highway use
Move to southern california. Makes it easier that way. LOL
The first # is the viscosity when starting and the second # is the viscosity when heated. us a lower rating for cold starts. the seconf # keep as you would like.
i own a repair shop, and 10-w-30 is a good all around oil to run all the time,i use it and never change just for winter,it should be alright ,,good luck,i hope this help,s.
10w 30 or 5w 30 if u in a very cold country and or got plenty mileage . NEVER 5w 20 or 10w 20 .
5w-20 will serve you nicely year round. If you really want a feeling for what's happening in your crankcase, pour a cup of each different viscosity rating oil in separate containers and leave them out in the cold. Try pouring them when they get below freezing and see which you would rather have in there!
Also... dirty oil would be much more of a problem than clean oil. Dirty oil, known as sludge, can be thick and gooey at room temperatures... an engine flush just before an oil filter and oil change just before winter cold should keep you running smooth.
Don't forget the battery come winter... those maintenance free batteries can let you down when they dry out!
Good luck!
Most engines these days use 5/30 year around altho 10/30 in the summer is ok. You definitly need 5/30 for the cold as it will get to moving parts quicker. I use syn-tec for that reason. 90% of engine wear happens in the first 30 seconds.

i would say that depends on the climate that you live in if its cooler yes 10w30 is fine but if its warmer 10w40 is better

What is proper motor oil weight for my 2007 V6 Ford Fusion?
The Owner's manual says to put in 5W-20. That seems awfully light weight to me. I live in an area that has mild winters, but can get pretty hot in the summer. Wouldn't a higher weight oil be more suitable, like 10W-30?
Is there something about this engine that requires a lower weight oil? What is proper motor oil weight for my 2007 V6 Ford Fusion?
Go with the owners manual. Ford designed and built the engine. They know better than anyone what should go in it. Ford has been recommending 5W20 oil in most of its vehicles for 6 years now and many other manufacturers such as Honda, Mazda and Chrysler have followed suit. On your particular vehicle, 5W20 is according to my information, the ONLY weight of oil that should be used, irregardless of weather.
As an added incentive to stick with what Ford says you should use, the local Ford dealer service manager informed me that not using the correct oil weight WILL void your engine warranty.
ASE Certified Automotive Service AdvisorWhat is proper motor oil weight for my 2007 V6 Ford Fusion?
If it gets over 100F, 10W30 would be good. As long as you don't go under 10F, you don't need 5W20.
If you're really worried about the heat, go with synthetic. 5W20 syn will protect better than 5W20 regular oil.
Go with the manual on this one. If you do want to go up in weight, don't go higher than 5W-30.
you can put that in it. heres how it works. the 10w is the weight of the oil or how heavy it is. The 30 is the viscosity or thickness and this is what matters most. In 4 cylinder cars the viscostiy will have more of an effect when increased on the motor then the weight of the oil. Moving up and down one notch wont effect it to much, but in the winter months, will slow the rotation of the motor in turn making the car work harder and wearing the motor down more quickly.
5w-30 would be the right choice, and I would recommend Schaeffer Oil which lasts about 10,000 miles!!!

What weight oil do I put in a 460 Ford Engine? Where do I add the oil?
THere is a removable cap where I can add it on the top right part of the engine (if I am looking at it from the front of the car). There are two large chrome pieces (one on either side of the air filter) do I add it here? What weight oil do I put in a 460 Ford Engine? Where do I add the oil?
To add the oil to your engine you should use the removable cap on the top right part of the engine. This is where you add the oil at all times. As to the two large chrome pieces on either side of the air filter do not add the oil here. As to the weight of oil you should use depends upon the condition of your engine and the outside temperatures. If you are going to be driving in colder weather then a lighter weight oil would be the best. Or if you are going to be driving in warmer weather you can go with a heavier weight oil. Actually every engine is different. And also depending upon if the engine has high miles or not. The best thing for you to do would be to consult your owner's manual. This will give you a good idea as to what to use concering what weight of oil you should use. As far as it being a 460... I have one myself... It is a 1978 Ford F-250 4x4. Granted it isn't the easiest on gas but if I drive mine normally it gets 20-25 miles per gallon. Of coarse this varies at times naturally. Hope this helps you some. What weight oil do I put in a 460 Ford Engine? Where do I add the oil?
those ';things'; are valve covers..the oil goes in there...but others are correct...obviously you know nothing...go to advance, auto zone or o'reillys...ask guy/gal.to help you check ALL fluids....really they are happy to get outside...check...engine oil...transmission fluid...power steering fluid...coolant level and concentration and brake fluid
DONT TOUCH A THING!!!!
I am not insulting you,
If you don't know even this little about it, don't touch it. Bring it and pay someone to do it for you!
It will be cheaper than replacing your car when you put oil in the wrong spot.
I agree with jimmy above. My friend's girl friend added the wrong oil to the car and caused more trouble then it did good.
At least ask (and see) where the oil goes (and what oil). And then next time copy his action.
Good Luck...
Should be a cap in the valve cover , and I would use a 10W 40 multi viscosity oil. Good luck with keeping gas in it :))vincent

The car has 238,000 miles on a rebuild 60,000 miles ago, and the previous owner told me to use Castrol GTX when I change the oil. I just forgot the weight number. What is the recommended motor oil weight for a 1992 240sx with a KA24DE motor?
take a look under the hood there should be a chart that specifies the weight for temp. When I had mine I looked at it I believe it was 10w30/ 10w40 in the winter 20w50 in the summer. depending on where you live and how hot it gets in the winter I'd maybe run 20w50 in it alll the time, high revving 4 cylinder motors need the extra protectionWhat is the recommended motor oil weight for a 1992 240sx with a KA24DE motor?
10w30 would do find but in Warner condition 10w40 would be better. remember to change your oil and filter every 3500 or 4000 miles. the oil now a days is better and you can run it a little longer,
You may be able to use wither 10w30 or 10w40. depending on where you live and the type of weather you have there.

What is the oil weight needed for 94 Nissan Altima?
I have a bottle of 10w 30 oil and wanted to know if an 1994 nissan altima required it.What is the oil weight needed for 94 Nissan Altima?
If you need to just add one bottle of oil to top off your oil level, then by all means do it. 10 w 30 will not harm your car at all. besides i'm sure there are quite a few miles on your car.
If your engine is in good condition, i would stick with 10w30 all the time.
Good luck! What is the oil weight needed for 94 Nissan Altima?
10w30 is what I would use unless it gave me problems.

What oil weight does the manufacturer recommend for a 1992-1995 honda civic d15?
I think it's on the oil cap but my oil cap is from another car and i don't have the manual to it.What oil weight does the manufacturer recommend for a 1992-1995 honda civic d15?
5w30 is recommended by honda. i use 20w50 on my 2000 civic si w/ b16a and i love it. takes some time to warm up in the morning but once warm its all the same. 5w30 and 10w30 is to thin i dont want my bearing taking a beating so i use thick oil and have'nt had any problemsWhat oil weight does the manufacturer recommend for a 1992-1995 honda civic d15?
Weight = 10W-30
Oil (Crankcase) Capacity 3 1/2 Quarts Including filter

Call 1-800-373-LUBE (5823) for technical information on engine oil, gear oil, grease %26amp; transmission fluid. Open monday through friday 8AM to 5PM central time.
Honda recommends 5w 30 but any other grade is ok depending on where you live and the weather.
Most say 10w30 but 5w30 is better. It isn't as heavy and better for 4 cylinder engines and you can use it all year long.
Most manufacturers recommend 10w30...

What is the best oil weight/formula for my 1998 Expedition?
As we head into the summer and the truck is geting older, I'm not sure which oil to keep handy for when we need to add a little here and there. What is the best oil weight/formula for my 1998 Expedition?
For the valves on the top of the engine always use the oil the manufacture recommends no matter the age or outside temperature. It is usually documented on the oil fill cap on the engine. What is the best oil weight/formula for my 1998 Expedition?
I use 10W30 and any good name brad will work fine, Valvolin, Pennzoil, Castro...ect... I use the high mileage versions.
I would still go with what Ford recommends. You can find this on the Oil cap where you add Oil to the engine.
Ford? 10w40 for sure.

Do vitamins b100,magnesium,flax oil, alpha lipoic acid, cinnamon, cayenne fruit cause weight gain?
sometimes i can have bowel movements and sometimes i can';t ,most vitamins give me diarreha, i also take valiums and vicodans and i know they don't help, but i also have I.B.S. and nothing seems to work for very long.Do vitamins b100,magnesium,flax oil, alpha lipoic acid, cinnamon, cayenne fruit cause weight gain?
Cinnamon will not cause weight gain. It is powdered tree bark -- all fiber -- and you won't ever eat enough of it for the calories to show up. Vitamins don't cause weight gain, either. I think part of the definition of 'vitamin' is that it is a nutrient that doesn't provide energy like fats, carbs and proteins do. (Vitamins can provide energy by helping your body use the other stuff, but that is different -- vitamins contain no calories.)
Flax oil, because it is an oil, contains calories, but seriously, how much flax oil are you talking about here? Surely not enough to add more than 10 calories or so to your diet each day... That isn't going to make you fat.vincent

Is Magnesium hydroxide a carbohydrate, fat or oil, protein or amino acid or none of these?
None of the above.
Carbohydrates are simple organic compounds that contain an aldehyde or ketone with hydroxyl groups.
Fat are tri esters of glycerol and fatty acids.
Protein is a chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds
Amino acids are compounds containing the amine as functional group.
All of the above are Organic compounds.
Magnesium hydroxide is an inorganic compound and used as an antacid. Is Magnesium hydroxide a carbohydrate, fat or oil, protein or amino acid or none of these?
It's a ph adjuster that isn't real strong. It's basic and increases pH. It's therefore none of the above. Is Magnesium hydroxide a carbohydrate, fat or oil, protein or amino acid or none of these?
Magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2, otherwise known as milk of magnesia, is commonly used as an antacid or a laxative. The mineral form of magnesium hydroxide is known as brucite. Magnesium hydroxide interferes with the absorption of folic acid and iron. The diarrhea caused by magnesium hydroxide carries away much of the body's supply of potassium, and failure to take extra potassium will lead to muscle cramps.
It has very low solubility in water. It does not completely dissociate and therefore is a weak base.
therefore.. none of the above..
hope i helped...

Is it ok to take a multi-vit,topped up with Magnesium, Vit B complex, selenium, linseed oil and agnus castu?
I researched it online, and apparantly is a good combo
if you have irregular periods etc, but it seems like a lot - however
I would only be taking so many of them untill i get results.
I would also be taking a ACE vit complexIs it ok to take a multi-vit,topped up with Magnesium, Vit B complex, selenium, linseed oil and agnus castu?
As long as you aren't getting too much of any of those nutrients with the combination, that's not a problem at all. Most multivitamins don't have a huge amount of Magnesium or Calcium (as those tend to be best when taken separately), but many have a good amount of Selenium and the B Vitamins.
You want to be careful about getting too much Selenium... typically 200 mcg is the maximum recommendations. As far as the B Vitamins, they are water-soluble, so your body will excrete out what it can't use. Because of that, it's best to take a B Complex separate from the multi so you can get the maximum benefit from the Bs in both of them.
I would also recommend against taking an ACE Vitamin complex in addition to the multi because it will already have Vitamin A and Vitamin E which are both fat-soluble and can build up to toxic levels in the body if you take too much.
You can definitely take the Linseed (aka Flaxseed) Oil and Agnus Castus (aka Vitex or Chasteberry) as those wouldn't interfere with a standard multivitamin. The Vitex would help the most with periods, too.
Good luck and I hope I helped!

yes, it may cause diarrehea initially. But nothing to worry.
How do you make magnesium oil?
rub it on you to get magnesium into your body for healthHow do you make magnesium oil?
Magnesium oil typically is made by a process of evaporation of deep ocean water, in which the minerals are concentrated, and sodium is removed. This mixture is filtered and purified before bottling. The final product is usually about 35% magnesium. This method yields a relatively pure magnesium oil.
Magnesium oil is not really an oil. When a magnesium chloride solution is very concentrated, it feels slippery to the touch, like an oil. When applied to skin or used in a bath, magnesium chloride can quickly be absorbed and raise magnesium levels in the body. Magnesium chloride apparently is more effective than magnesium sulfate, or epsom salt, for trandermal use.
Another way magnesium oil is made is by extracting magnesium deposited in ancient seabeds lying deep underground. This involves a complex process of dissolving the magnesium within the earth and pumping it to the surface. This method produces the purest magnesium oil, which is known as Ancient Minerals, according to Dr. Mark Sircus, author of Transdermal Magnesium Therapy (Phaelos 2007).
Others methods may exist, including mixing magnesium chloride in the form of nigari (a Japanese condiment and tofu coagulant, and which itself is derived by a process of seawater evaporation) with distilled water. Depending on the source of the seawater and how it is processed, nigari may not be a pure source of magnesium chloride for therapeutic applications (e.g., on skin). Industrial pollutants and heavy metals may be present, especially if the mixture is not properly filtered. This method appears to be preferred by individuals who wish to make their own magnesium oil, or to avoid the cost of commercial magnesium oils.
Magnesium chloride created in laboratories with basic chemicals apparently also has been used to create concentrated magnesium chloride solutions. This approach (according to Dr. Sircus) yields a product that contain relatively high amounts of certain toxins, including heavy metals, like lead.
Seabed magnesium oil and ocean water magnesium oil are readily available from many vendors, including HPDI, an established provider of high quality health products:
http://www.integratedhealth.com
Look for Ancient Minerals or Ocean Minerals magnesium oils. These are very pure magnesium chloride solutions.
Nigari can be found at most Asian or ethnic markets.
Use of synthetic magnesium chloride is not advisable, unless the product is tested for purity and does not contain heavy metals or other pollutants. How do you make magnesium oil?
I get my ';Ultra Pure'; Magnesium Oil from http://www.puremagoil.com Their Magnesium Oil Products are very Pure and they are 1/2 the COST of other brands. They have Prehistoric Magnesium Oil that comes from the same Geological Formation as the Zechstein Products but made in the USA. PURITY for LESS!! Report Abuse
Yes, I went to the website and they have wonderful products and for a GREAT price! Report Abuse

Oil rigs often have big lumps of magnesium attached to their legs under water. Why?
Just a question in my Science book that i have no idea about. Please help me understand!Oil rigs often have big lumps of magnesium attached to their legs under water. Why?
To stop the oil rig rusting - it's called sacrificial protection.
Sacrificial protection is used for ships, under water pipelines
and oil rigs (for example in the North Sea).
Blocks of a more reactive metal (for example magnesium or zinc)
are attached to the ship's hull or the under water pipe.
The magnesium or zinc can also be connected
to a pipeline or oil rig by conducting cables.
Sacrificial protection is similar to a displacement reaction
with the electrons traveling from the more reactive metal to the steel
either directly or through the conducting cable.
This reverses the oxidation process.
3Zn(s) arrow 3Zn2+(aq) + 6e- Zinc is oxidised as it dissolves.
2Fe3+(s) + 6e- arrow 2Fe(s) Iron ions are reduced to iron atoms. Rusty steel is returned to iron metal.
The block of zinc or magnesium is sacrificed to keep the steel from rusting and must be replaced before it all dissolves.
This is less expensive than rebuilding the ship or replacing the pipe or oil rig
this is what they look like
