If the USA switches to electric cars and trucks will the oil empires collapse?

Think about it, we use a tremendous amount of oil off the world market and many evil empires or semi evil empires live off this cash flow, if we switch to electric cars that can be charged with solar power these empires will become much weaker and the USA will become much more powerful as our money will stay here. Plus we will have less pollution. The middle east will become a slum and Russia will fall dramatically and Chavez will be nothing. As far as I'm concerned I say goodbye to oil and good riddance. If the USA switches to electric cars and trucks will the oil empires collapse?
First let me say settle down RKO. We Americans are a clever bunch, and when were pushed far enough we push back...with a vengeance. I refuse to believe that this oil crisis will be the demise of our great nation, when we haven't even begun to fight.

The cost to run an electric vehicle is approx. 2 cents per mile.

My mini van gets 18 miles per gallon, and that costs, about 25 cents per mile. If everyone went to electric (as I myself plan to do , shortly) OPEC would hurt, but they would rebound in short time.

#1 We would still need oil for other things like plastics.

#2 The rest of the world would also still need oil.

#3 OPEC would simply pump less oil, thus making the prices stay high.

The thing about Electricity is, in order to make it viable we would need to go to nuclear power, I don't think that will happen till gas gets over $10 a gallon, and then it will take years to build the plants. Any way you look at it it's going to take a while before this is all settled, but it will get settled! If the USA switches to electric cars and trucks will the oil empires collapse?
Like many ';environmentalists'; and Democrats playing partisan politics, you're living in some alternate universe, not a real world.

There are 240 million vehicles in the US and that's not counting boats, ships and airplanes.

Many of those are trucks and tractors that can't work on electricity because they need POWER to haul heavy loads or do heavy work.

Also many people maintain their vehicles and keep them for decades. They're not going to junk them for electric vehicles with limited range and lighter weight that are impractical for long range driving.

Electricity is still generated with coal and natural gas.

Most people's homes are heated with natural gas or fuel oil.

Do you expect everyone in America to yank out their home heating systems to convert to something else?

How long would that take realistically and how much would that cost?

Much of the US can't use today's solar technology or other methods at economical means.

It will be DECADES before this is feasible.
Petroleum will still be used for many other things.... makeup, clothes, just about everything will most likely drastically rise in price to make up the difference.

By switching to electric cars, the oil companies would eventually collapse. The only way that they could possibly survive the falling demand is if they sufficiently reduced their overhead. No more private jets, no more million dollar salaries to CEOs, no more donating to the Republican Party, no more buying nations.
It is unlikely that the empire will collapse. As oil is a necessary compound needed to make these plastic cars, and production of electricity to power these cars. Oil is also a vital component in the production of fertilizer need to sustain modern industrial agriculture. So it is quite possible that even if we were able to switch to 100% electric cars tommorow the empire could strike back.
well the point is that we are trying to get off oil but the fact is its still the cheapest way to power your car. Right now the US consumes about 16 percent of the world oil production, but if we create a cheaper source of power then everyone will want to use it and yes oil will be obsolete...but this isntt going to happen anytime soon
Electric car plugging into your home, and this energy is devised by what.........OIL and/or COAL.

Furthermore, the World will never get off oil 100%. Oil is used in many products being manufactured today. There will ALWAYS be a need for oil, so do NOT let those Politicians and World Leaders fool you otherwise.
If we switched COMPLETELY over to electric and alternative fueled cars, it would hurt the oil empires, but it wouldn't collapse them.

Remember, you still have China and India.
You still have a lot of other products made from oils and you still need grease for the bearings on the electric cars and trucks.
No, they will just switch their investment into making batteries, and then they will overcharge for those too.
Electric cars are extremely expensive and go about 40 mph tops.
No ,we will need oil to make all the plastics. Also to lube all the machinery.
Nope, Oil would become cheap for other poor people of world. They would progress fast than.
Great. All you need to do now is to develop an efficient solar converter. Check back with us as soon as you've got it.
I can't see that happening any time soon
I would hate to see what my electric bill would run. Its high enough now.
I see this as a long-term conspiracy that's been going on for perhaps fifty years, and will continue until we've sucked every drop of OIL from the Earth. By that time, the OIL barons will have accumulated trillions of dollars in profits and use it all to create a 'new' energy market. All they have to do is figure out how to make less expensive 'alternative energies' more profitable. That will require making natural resources such as gas, coal, water and air less available and accessible. Then they'll do what they did with OIL: manipulate the market, fix prices, and gouge the consumers.

'Big business' is rotten to the core, regardless of all the 'warm and fuzzy' Chevron commercials you see on PBS about how much they care about the Earth. All they 'care' about is lining their pockets. 'Big' business will never let small businesspeople survive in the cut-throat world of capitalism.

Eventually, the OIL capitals of the world will be reduced to rusted-out hulks of their former selves as the world abandons OIL and uses new forms of energy. Only nations like Dubai and China will survive to become new world leaders and global peacekeepers. The United States will go the way of all other great 'empires' (like the Greeks and Romans) that crumbled once arrogance, ignorance, sloth, neglect, avarice and hubris set in; within the next two generations, the United States of America will cease to exist as it is today. It will become - literally - a third world country whose middle class has been gouged out of its economy. -RKO- 07/12/08
