use heavier weight in summer time and lighter weight in winter. The lighter weight in winter allows the oil too lubricate engine quicker and warm up faster, Also start using a heavier weight after 100K miles due to engine wear.When is it appropriate to increase the oil weight of your car?
you can put 10w in the spring but when the weather turns cold you shoulld downgrade to5w this help your engine last longer also when you warm up your ride don't rev it up let it idleWhen is it appropriate to increase the oil weight of your car?
i think you mean the viscosity? when the engine has done 80k plus. there are oils for high mileage cars.

Generally higher oil weight like 20W50 etc is applicable for high temperature, high load or racing applications. The heavy oil works better at high temperature, but puts more stress when the engine is starting and operating at light load, especially in cold temperature conditions.
