What oil weight should i use in 2002 4.6 v8 ford explorer?

my manual says only to use 5w 20 in this engine, my dad says i should use thicker weight in summer and thinner weight in winter. What oil weight should i use in 2002 4.6 v8 ford explorer?
Your dad is absolutely correct, HOWEVER his advice will only apply to older vehicles.......On newer engines (new being less than a 10 year old design, TYPICALLY, not always) the tolerances and clearances (space between moving parts) is very tight, and you need to put an oil thin enough to pass through the oil galleys and passages, but at the same time thick enough to protect the metal.....Could you use a heavier weight oil like a 5w-30, or 10w-30 without any problems? Maybe, but I would not recommend it. The engineers at Ford didn't just pick randomly to use 5w-20, they chose it for several good reasons......If it was my car, i would use a full synthetic 5w-20 oil.............ASE certified technician, Associate Degree in Applied Science in Automotive Technology
