Magnesium oil typically is made by a process of evaporation of deep ocean water, in which the minerals are concentrated, and sodium is removed. This mixture is filtered and purified before bottling. The final product is usually about 35% magnesium. This method yields a relatively pure magnesium oil.
Magnesium oil is not really an oil. When a magnesium chloride solution is very concentrated, it feels slippery to the touch, like an oil. When applied to skin or used in a bath, magnesium chloride can quickly be absorbed and raise magnesium levels in the body. Magnesium chloride apparently is more effective than magnesium sulfate, or epsom salt, for trandermal use.
Another way magnesium oil is made is by extracting magnesium deposited in ancient seabeds lying deep underground. This involves a complex process of dissolving the magnesium within the earth and pumping it to the surface. This method produces the purest magnesium oil, which is known as Ancient Minerals, according to Dr. Mark Sircus, author of Transdermal Magnesium Therapy (Phaelos 2007).
Others methods may exist, including mixing magnesium chloride in the form of nigari (a Japanese condiment and tofu coagulant, and which itself is derived by a process of seawater evaporation) with distilled water. Depending on the source of the seawater and how it is processed, nigari may not be a pure source of magnesium chloride for therapeutic applications (e.g., on skin). Industrial pollutants and heavy metals may be present, especially if the mixture is not properly filtered. This method appears to be preferred by individuals who wish to make their own magnesium oil, or to avoid the cost of commercial magnesium oils.
Magnesium chloride created in laboratories with basic chemicals apparently also has been used to create concentrated magnesium chloride solutions. This approach (according to Dr. Sircus) yields a product that contain relatively high amounts of certain toxins, including heavy metals, like lead.
